P2P-Radio: Peer to Peer Streaming

P2P-Radio can distribute audio streams in the MP3 and Ogg Vorbis formats and video streams in the NSV format over the Internet. This is done in a peer-to-peer way. The broadcaster doesn't need to send the stream to every single listener, because the listeners distribute it among themselves.

Properties of P2P-Radio:

• Easy to use (graphical user interface)
• You can play the music/video with your media player (i.e. Winamp)
• A Shoutcast/Icecast Internet radio/TV station is used as audio/video source
• Freeloaders (peers that only listen but don't want to send the stream to other listeners) will be detected
• The data stream is signed, you can be sure that it arrives unchanged
• Very efficient communication (low overhead)
• The network structure can be viewed with a monitor

P2P-Radio's History

P2P-Radio arose from a semester thesis of Michael Kaufmann at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zürich.
